WE ARE THE FALLEN Covers IRON MAIDEN, MADONNA At Debut Gig

WE ARE THE FALLEN — the new band featuring original EVANESCENCE members Ben Moody (guitar) and John LeCompt (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums) along with "American Idol" powerhouse vocalist Carly Smithson — made its live debut last night (Tuesday, March 23) at the Kings College Students Union in London, England. Although the group's set focused primarily on the material that will appear on the band's forthcoming debut album, "Tear The World Down", WE ARE THE FALLEN also threw in two surprise cover versions — IRON MAIDEN's "Flight Of Icarus" and MADONNA's "Like A Prayer".

"Tear The World Down" is scheduled for release on May 11 via Universal Republic Records. The group's first single, "Bury Me Alive", was made available exclusively via the digital domain in early February. A second track, "Without You", is currently being streamed on the band's official web site.

WE ARE THE FALLEN filmed a video for the song "Bury Me Alive" in February in Los Angeles with directors Kyle Newman and Jaime King.

The "Bury Me Alive" video concept is described as follows: "This video will take us through the stages of burial as a visual metaphor for when someone crosses you or has 'sold out' something sacred. Although the video will have a dark, vintage Victorian flair, it will be shot and designed to ultimately convey a timeless theme and story."

"I don't hear EVANESCENCE in our music," Smithson told U.K.'s Rock Sound magazine. "OK, there are small parts, but I wrote 'Bury Me Alive' before I met the boys. The influences I had when I was making the song — like IRON MAIDEN, those choruses — that's what I hear… When I met the boys I didn't know much about the band before because I wasn't a big EVANESCENCE fan. I'm more stuck in the '80s. I didn't know their story when I came into the band and they had to explain that. I don't hear EVANESCENCE, and when people hear the record they'll hear that. They'll hear WE ARE THE FALLEN, and we are a new band."

Regarding the band's name, Smithson said, "This happened through me helping a friend move into a house. My friend Monique moved in with Ben, I met him and all of us wanted to be musicians and go down the same path… Ben's girlfriend came up with the name. We've all had this up and down journey; Marty always wanted to be in a band, John, Rocky and Ben all had EVANESCENCE which came to an end and I've had multiple things which have all ended. Not all of us achieve immediately in life, and it's sending a message to everyone that it's OK to fail once in a while and be part of something that didn't work out."
